Dublin Bus Independent Travel Scheme – supporting passengers with additional needs to use public transport independently.
The Independent Travel Scheme is a free training service for people aged 18 and over, helping them use public transport independently.
A trained member of the Independent Travel team meets you and travels with you on your regular route (e.g. to school, work, or shops). They teach skills such as:
- Planning your journey
- Reading timetables
- Using buses, DART, or Luas
- Staying safe while travelling
- Support for wheelchair users to practise safely manoeuvring on and off the bus
Support continues until you feel confident travelling on your own.
We also offer visits to disability units, during the visit, our team gives a short talk and a guided tour of the bus, showing how to use the bus features, how to engage with the driver, and feel more confident when travelling. In 2026, the team visited Marino Special School to deliver a talk and give students a guided tour of the bus.

Since its launch in Dublin 15 years ago, the Independent Travel Support (ITS) scheme has helped hundreds of people build the confidence and skills needed to travel on their own. At the heart of the programme is Roger Flood, who has spent many years supporting people to become confident and independent public transport users. To celebrate Roger’s work on the scheme, we decided to surprise him with a few familiar passengers……watch the video below.
