Student Leapcard

What is a Student Leap Card?
A Student Leap Card is a reusable plastic smart card that can be loaded with travel credit or tickets to be used instead of paying with cash when travelling on all Dublin Bus services, including Airlink, Xpresso and Nitelink, as well as Luas, DART and Commuter Rail services.

Student Leap Card applications can only be completed online at

What is Travel Credit?
Travel Credit works in a similar way to mobile phone credit. It is a cash value which you load onto your card and every time you use the card to travel, the cost of the journey is deducted. You can top-up your card online, at a Payzone outlet and at Luas and Irish Rail ticket machines or on the official Leap Top-Up App for iPhone and Android.

What is Leap Card Fare Capping?
Fare Capping is really easy. The Leap Card system caps the use of travel credit, so once you have taken trips using your travel credit that add up to the equivalent to the daily or weekly cap value, you can continue to travel as normal, but no further travel credit will be taken from your card.

The weekly cap is measured on a calendar week, starting on Monday and finishing on Sunday. The daily cap is €5.00 and the weekly cap is €20.00.

Please note the weekly capping period starts at 4:30am on Monday to 4:29am the following Monday, the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over. A new daily capping period starts at 4:30am each day and the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over.

There is also a multi-operator cap if you are travelling on Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Commuter Rail.

The daily cap is €7.50 and the weekly Cap is €30.00. When the cap is reached you should continue to touch on as normal to have a valid ticket.

Fares paid on Tours do not count towards the cap. Any fares paid for a travelling companion do not count towards the cap.

Dublin Bus Only  Bus / Luas / Dart Commuter Rail
  Daily Weekly Daily Weekly
Adult Cap €5.00 €20.00 €7.50 €30.00

What is Leap 90 Discount?
If you take two or more buses to get to your destination, Leap 90 Discount will automatically refund up to €1.00 when you board a second bus within 90 minutes of the previous trip.  The maximum discount is €1.00 (€0.95 child fare), if the fare is cheaper than €1.00 the fare will simply be refunded in full to your Leap Card.

The discount applies when you board any bus within 90 minutes of the previous bus, so if you are making a third or subsequent transfer, you will also get a discount on that fare. Leap 90 Discount also applies to journeys taken within 90 minutes, to or from Luas, DART and Commuter Rail journeys.

It is important to note that the Leap card will ALWAYS select the best value fare option from the travel credit. No action is necessary as the system does it for you.
