What is a Young Adult Card?

A Young Adult card is a TFI Leap Card that can be used to pay for travel by anyone who is 19 to 23 years old, up to their 24th birthday. The user’s name and photograph is printed on it

Applications can only be completed online at leapcard.ie. You will need to upload proof of your age and take a live selfie when ordering the card online. A valid passport, EU National ID, Driver's Licence or Learner Permit is the only documentation accepted for proof of age.

If you are over 23 and enrolled in full time education (16 hours a week or more), including further education and training, you can apply for the student card.

What is Travel Credit?
Travel Credit works in a similar way to mobile phone credit. It is a cash value which you load onto your card and every time you use the card to travel, the cost of the journey is deducted. You can top-up your card online, at a Payzone outlet and at Luas and Irish Rail ticket machines or on the official Leap Top-Up App for iPhone and Android.

What is Leap Card Fare Capping?
Fare Capping is really easy. The Leap Card system caps the use of travel credit, so once you have taken trips using your travel credit that add up to the equivalent to the daily or weekly cap value, you can continue to travel as normal, but no further travel credit will be taken from your card.

The weekly cap is measured on a calendar week, starting on Monday and finishing on Sunday. The daily cap is €2.80 and the weekly cap is €11.00.

Please note the weekly capping period starts at 4:30am on Monday to 4:29am the following Monday, the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over. A new daily capping period starts at 4:30am each day and the amount spent is reset and cannot be carried over.

There is also a multi-operator cap if you are travelling on Dublin Bus, Luas, DART and Commuter Rail.

The daily cap is €4.00 and the weekly Cap is €16.00. When the cap is reached you should continue to touch on as normal to have a valid ticket.

Fares paid on Tours do not count towards the cap. Any fares paid for a travelling companion do not count towards the cap.
