Kilmainham Gaol tourist attraction
Kilmainham Gaol is one of Dublin’s most popular tourist attractions and is located on the west side of Dublin, toward the outskirts of the city. It is infamous among Dubliners as it was the scene of the imprisonment and execution of the rebels of the 1916 Easter Rising. The gaol itself was built in 1796 and was the scene of hangings and incarceration of men women and children until the 20th century. Famous names like Robert Emmet and Charles Stewart Parnell spent time in the prison, as well as Padraig Pearse, Eamonn DeValera and the other leaders of the 1916 Easter Rising. The gaol has also been used in several high profile movies including In the Name of the Father, The Italian Job and The Wind that Shakes the Barley.
