Prepaid Smartcard

Dublin Bus is working with Dublin’s Transport Operators and the RPA to have a fully integrated ticketing scheme with a single card available for use on all Public Transport Services.

As part of this scheme Dublin Bus has installed new Smartcard readers on all buses in our fleet. The Smartcard reader is located to the right at the entrance door of the bus, just above the Magnetic ticket reader.

Over the next few months a number of Magnetic prepaid tickets will convert to prepaid Smartcard. In the transition period, both Smartcards and Magnetic prepaid tickets will be in operation on all Dublin Bus services.

How does the Smartcard reader work?

All Smartcards with the smartcard ticket symbol seen below must be validated on the Smartcard reader.

Smartcard Reader TargetYou must validate your Smartcard by holding the Smartcard on the reader target for at least a second or until a light appears.

The new Smartcard reader will not print validity dates on the Smartcard however the reader will display details of journeys or days of travel left each time you validate the Smartcard. On monthly and annual tickets the card expiry date will be displayed on the screen of the Smartcard reader.
