Exact Fare System
The Autofare is our exact fare system in operation on Dublin Bus services.
How does it work?
- Having established the appropriate fare for the journey, you insert the exact fare in coins only into the top of the fare box. Notes are not accepted. Calculate Your Fare
- A ticket will then be issued by the ticket machine once the driver is satisfied that the correct fare has been deposited.
- If you have to deposit more than the exact fare, the driver will issue a passenger change ticket for the overpayment. This passenger change ticket, together with your travel ticket, must be presented at Dublin Bus, 59 Upper O`Connell Street, in order to claim a refund of the overpayment.
Please note no change is given by the driver or machine and the driver is not allowed under any circumstances to handle cash.
Prepaid tickets
You can also pay your fare with a prepaid ticket. We offer a wide variety of Bus, Bus/Rail and Bus/Luas tickets to suit all your travel needs. These tickets are designed with integrated transport in mind.
Prepaid tickets are valid on Dublin Bus scheduled services excluding Airlink, Nitelink, Tours, Special Events and Private Contract services unless otherwise stated and are on sale at over 400 shops. To find your nearest shop please go to our A-Z listing of ticket agents. Only prepaid tickets purchased from our authorised Ticket Agents or Dublin Bus Head Office are valid for travel on Dublin Bus services.
All magnetic prepaid tickets must be inserted into the bus validator when boarding.
All prepaid smartcard tickets must be validated by holding the smartcard on the reader target for at least a second or until a light appears. Learn how to use a prepaid Smartcard.
